What is neurofeedback?Neurofeedback therapy is a type of biofeedback that helps individuals regulate their brain activity. It uses real-time monitoring of brain waves to provide feedback, allowing people to train their brains to function more efficiently. This therapy is often used for conditions like ADHD, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and chronic pain, as well as for cognitive enhancement and peak performance training.

What type of neurofeedback is offered at HarmonyNeuro? We offer dynamical nonlinear neurofeedback using the NeurOptimal® system. NeurOptimal® is an advanced neurofeedback technology designed to optimize brain function through a non-invasive training process. It operates by monitoring the brain's electrical activity and providing real-time feedback via brief interruptions in music or audio, which prompts the brain to self-correct and reorganize itself. To learn more, please visit the NeurOptimal® FAQ page.

What should I expect to experience with the NeurOptimal® system?During a NeurOptimal® session you will wear ear clips and two small sensors on the sides of your head. These pick up the delicate electrical activist of your brain. You relax and listen to music for 33 minutes while the system processes your brain signals very rapidly. When it detects them moving into an "instability", the music pauses very briefly. This is the feedback given to your brain to rewire your neuropathways and gradually bring you back to homeostasis.

Who can benefit from neurofeedback?Anyone and everyone. The neurofeedback method we use is safe to use on people of all ages and with a wide range of needs. Those who are looking to improve themselves academically, professionally, or in in sports train with neurofeedback in order to optimize their performance and give them a boost. For people who struggle with depression, anxiety, chronic pain, migraines, fatigue, ADHD, PTSD, etc, neurofeedback improves their quality of life by rewiring the old neuropathways in their brain. For a more comprehensive look at benefits, see the results questions at the bottom of the FAQs.

Is neurofeedback safe?NeurOptimal® neurofeedback is considered safe because it's a non-invasive, passive system that does not force or manipulate brain activity. Instead of pushing the brain toward specific frequencies, it provides real-time feedback on brainwave patterns, allowing the brain to self-correct naturally. Since it does not impose external stimulation or require diagnosis-based protocols, there is minimal risk of side effects like overstimulation or discomfort, making it a gentle and well-tolerated approach for people of all ages.

Do you diagnose conditions? Do you treat particular illnesses and symptoms? We don't diagnose or treat particular conditions. We also don't actively target particular symptoms because that is not what the NeurOptimal® system is designed to do. Traditional linear neurofeedback therapy maps the brain (EEG) and then the practitioner treats particular symptoms according to this map and administers a set protocol for that person's condition. While this can be effective to a degree, an EEG is merely a static snapshot of the brain at one particular moment in time. The reality is that our brains is constantly changing and adapting and so it often benefits from a more fluid approach with dynamical non-linear neurofeedback. At HarmonyNeuro, the NeurOptimal® system treats you holistically, and allows your brain to train and rewire itself over time without any manipulation from the practitioner. As a result, you will experience relief from many of the issues that come out of having inefficiencies that you've incurred overtime through your experiences and by living in the modern world.

How long is one session?A neurofeedback training session lasts 33 minutes. We allow some an additional time to check in on progress, and for set-up and break-down.
-
How many sessions of neurofeedback will I need? The recommended amount is 20-30 sessions. However, this truly depends on each individual's needs. Some clients start to notice a sense of calm after just a few sessions. For others, 7 sessions is the magic number where they start to notice improvement with their stress and sleep. At around 20 sessions, people start to really notice definite shifts in their mood and behavior. At the 30-session mark, clients report significant improvements. For those with severe conditions, 40-50+ sessions will make an even greater impact. Again, it all depends on the individual. The nice thing is that your gain are your gains with neurofeedback training. The rewiring of your brain lasts. There are some who benefit from tune-ups here and there when they are going through a particularly stressful time in their lives, but neurofeedback is not something you have to keep doing in order to maintain the results.
-
How frequently can I train with neurofeedback? We recommend coming for sessions at least 2x per week. However, the pace is totally up to you. If your schedule only allows once per week or every two weeks, your journey will take a little longer, but will be just as effective. For those that would like an accelerated timeframe, you may want to consider completing 5+ sessions per week (see discounted packages).

What results should I expect?Neurofeedback can provide the following:
-
Do the results last?Yes, the results of NeurOptimal® neurofeedback can be long-lasting because it trains the brain to optimize its own functioning. Once the brain adapts to more efficient patterns, many individuals continue to experience improvements even after completing their sessions. The good news is that your gains are your gains and you will not lose the benefits you incur from your neurofeedback sessions. When factors such as stress, lifestyle shifts, or new challenges surface, and an occasional refresher can help.
